on the benghazi terror attack on our u.s. consulate there. joining me now, former u.n. ambassador to the united nations, john bolton and a fox news contributor. good to have you with us this afternoon. secretary clinton is still recovering from her illness and of course will prevent her from travelling abroad, but it will allow her to testify next month in an open congressional hearing on the september 11th attack on benghazi. what do you think her testimony will reveal about the events leading up to the attack, during and afterwards? >> of course, it depends on how well the hearings are prepared by members of congress, they need to give up their opening statements, they need to ask questions, not make their own statements. they need to coordinate to divide up responsibility because this is, this is an opportunity that's only going to come once and if they're making their own statements or duplicating their questions we're going to find out a lot less. i think the areas of inquiry fall into three categories, number one, what did the secretary know before the september 11th attacks about request

withdrew her name over the problem over benghazi. >>reporter: several republican senators said today they still have questions about what the president and secretary clinton knew of security at consulate and the attack and when did they know it. they called today for a defense department study to decide whether there should be marines posted at more installations and they said secretary clinton who did not testify this week on capitol hill should testify before john kerry is confirmed. >> i want someone to ask secretary clinton, why didn't you go on tv september 16 when ambassador rice says that secretary clinton wasn't available because she was sick and giving grief counseling, and i want to see if that withstands scrutiny. >>reporter: despite the criticism in the wake of benghazi attack no republicans indicated they will vote against confirming john kerry. >>gregg: thank you, when we talk more about this, chris wall has, what does john kerry bring to the post? >>chris: tremendous experience as wendell said, 27 years in the senate, and he has longed if the job for a long-term. there
the benghazi controversy. what can we expect? susan estrich, a professor of political signs at usc, does it matter that john kerry was not the president's first choice? >> it doesn't matter at all. the issue with kerry from the get-go was not confidential or qualifications, not loyalty to president obama after all. he endorsed him in the primaries, the issue was a guy named scott brown, who is a former republican senators from massachusetts, narrowly lost his race to elizabeth warren and now what we'll have, there will be a temporary appointment and a special election in massachusetts. and, scott brown, notwithstanding my home state is democrat, is leading all the democrats, and the issue with kerry, it would cost a democratic seat, likely in the senate. >> rick: i want to go back to the idea the president badly wanted sutures rice to be the next secretary of state and made no secret about it and she had to go and withdraw her name from consideration. now, assuming john kerry wins confirmation, we'll talk about the process in a minute, does it matter if a secretary kerry is sitting down
